TELECOM COMPANIES TARGETED

Patent licensor, EON, has brought suit against the telecom's for infringement of two-way communication networks. The patent suit as brought in the Eastern District of Texas.

The Eastern District continues to get a lion's share of patent infringement cases, but how long can it last?

TURNING THE TABLE ON ACACIA

Adobe has turned the table on Acacia, a well-known patent "licensor", by filing a patent infringement suit on an image-enhancing process.  Adobe's DJ action for non-infringement was brought in Northern California.

REMBRANDT SUES AGAIN

Rembrandt has filed suit in the Eastern District of Virginia against AOL, Brinks, ADT Security, and DirecTV, among others. The patent infringement suit relates to dial-up modem technology.

WHERE CAN A PATENT HOLDER BE SUED?

According to the Federal Circuit, a patent owner may not be subject to jurisdiction in a state where the out-of-state patent owner makes a dozen online sales in the state at issue, attends a trade show in the state at issue, and accuses someone of infringement at the show.

However, when the patent owner seeks to remove infringing products from the trade show and thereby limit competition at the trade show, jurisdiction over the patent owner can exist.

WAMU'S TROUBLES CONTINUE

Data Treasury has added to WaMu's woes by bringing suit for patent infringement over check imaging technology.  Where? The Eastern District of Texas.

This is but one of many patent infringement suits by Data Treasury against financial institutions.

COMPUTER PRINTER COS SUED

In the Eastern District of Texas, thirty defendants were sued by Whetstone Electronics for patent infringement.  Some of the defendants include Epson, Kodak, and HP.  The technology relates to preflighting image information that can be transferred to a printer.

HOW DOES A BANK KEEP YOUR CHANGE

Patent holding company Every Penny Counts sued Bank of America and Visa for patent infringement in Florida.  The defendants provide a program to increase customer accounts by the bank rounding up a customer purchase to the nearest dollar and transfers the difference from the customer's checking account into a savings account.

NIKE AND APPLE PATENT TROUBLES CONTINUE

PhatRat holds patents for athletic performance, including distance and speed. Nike and Apple have been sued for patent infringement in Colorado over their joint product for a runner. A Nike-iPod Sport Kit provides a sensor that connects an iPod and shoe for a runner to see in realtime the runner's speed and pace.

GOOD FISCAL NEWS FOR PATENT OWNERS

President Bush has recommended in a recent budget that the US Patent Office keep all of its fee collections. 

Why should the fees by patent holders be diverted to other government budgets?

LCD TECHNOLOGY PATENT INFRINGEMENT

In NY, Anvik has brought an infringement suit over 5 of its patents covering scanning microlithography systems.  Such systems are used in the manufacture of flat-panel displays, televisions, and ICs. The defendants include Samsung, LG, and Sharp.
